Is New Zealand's North Island worth it?
The South Island gets the postcards. The North has the caves, the film set, the geothermal country and the shortest drives between them. An honest case, with the numbers.

Ask travellers which island to do and most of them say South, quickly, as though it were obvious. It is not obvious. The South Island has the mountains and the fjords. The North has almost everything else, and it has them close enough together that a five-day loop is a real holiday rather than a driving marathon.
Is the North Island worth visiting?
Yes, and the strongest argument is density rather than any single sight. Auckland to Waitomo is 202 kilometres, Waitomo to Matamata 83, Matamata to Rotorua about 65. That puts a glowworm cave, a film set and a geothermal field within a few hours of each other, which the South Island cannot match on distance.
That compactness is the thing people underrate. On the North Island you drive for an hour and arrive somewhere different. On the South you drive for four and arrive somewhere spectacular. Both are good trips; only one of them works in five days.

What is actually on it?
A cave full of an animal found nowhere else, a film set treated more carefully than most museums, and ground that steams. Those three are the spine of the standard loop, and each of them is specific rather than generic.
The caves at Waitomo hold a colony of Arachnocampa luminosa, endemic to New Zealand, in limestone roughly 30 million years old. The tour is 45 minutes at from NZ$81 on the operator's gate price. Hobbiton runs about two hours at NZ$89 adult. Rotorua is a geothermal field you can smell before you reach it.
None of those individually justifies a long-haul flight. Together, with the driving between them, they justify a week. And the driving is genuinely part of it: between Auckland and Rotorua you pass through dairy country, limestone gorges, native bush and volcanic hill country in a few hours.
The two islands are not competing on the same axis, which is why the argument never resolves.

What is the honest case against it?
No Southern Alps, no Milford Sound, and Auckland is not the reason anybody comes. If your mental image of New Zealand is a glacier above a turquoise lake, the North Island will not supply it, and you should go south.
The North's landscapes are green, volcanic and rolling rather than alpine. That reads as pleasant rather than staggering in photographs, and it is one reason the island loses the popularity contest. In person the difference is smaller than the photographs suggest, but photographs are how people plan.
The second honest point: the marquee attractions are heavily visited and run to schedules. Waitomo takes up to 500,000 visitors a year on a departure every half hour, with groups traveller-reported at around 23. That is a managed experience, not a discovery, and the complaints about it are real.

How many days does it need?
Five for the classic loop, seven to do it without watching the clock. Waitomo is day one out of Auckland and costs about 90 minutes on site, which is the least demanding major stop on the route.
Doing it anticlockwise keeps every leg short: Waitomo first, then Matamata for Hobbiton, then Rotorua, then back. Going the other way ends the trip with the longest drive of it. The full itinerary sets out the order and where to sleep.
Within a day, cave departures every 30 minutes make the cave the flexible half of any two-site plan, and the Hobbiton tour's fixed times make it the rigid half. Doing both in one day covers the timing.
What would make you regret skipping it?
The glowworms, honestly. There is no equivalent anywhere else. The species exists only in New Zealand, and the Glowworm Grotto at Waitomo holds the densest accessible colony of it. Reviewers reach for the word galaxy and mean it.
The tour is short, the boat section shorter, and the worth-it guide is direct about who should book something else. But the thing itself is not replicable, and it sits 202 kilometres from the country's main airport on a road you were probably driving anyway.

Those figures are the ones shown on the live listings. One district on one afternoon of the loop offers a boat ride, a wetsuit adventure, two private caves and a formations tour, which is not the profile of an island short of things to do.
What does the loop cost in total?
Less than the flights that got you there, which is the honest framing for a long-haul visitor. Tickets are a small share of a North Island week.
