Ruakuri Cave vs the Glowworm Cave
Two caves, five minutes apart, run by the same operator, and almost nothing else in common. One has the boat. The other has the time, the photographs and the ramp.

How do the three caves actually differ?
Length, glowworms, cameras and steps. Those four lines decide it for almost everyone. The Glowworm Cave is the short famous one with the boat. Ruakuri is the long quiet one you can photograph and roll a wheelchair through. Aranui is the pretty one with no glowworms, because it has no water for them to fish over.

Which cave has the better glowworms?
Different, not better. The Glowworm Cave concentrates its colony in one chamber, the Grotto, and you see it from a boat with the lights off and everyone silent. Ruakuri spreads its glowworms along a walking route, so you get closer and you get longer, but you never get that single overhead ceiling of light that the Grotto is famous for.
The trade is time against theatre. Reviewers who wanted the postcard image are happy with the boat and then complain that it lasted five to ten minutes. Reviewers who came out of Ruakuri talk about being able to stand still and actually look. Both reactions appear constantly on the listings, and both are fair.
Ruakuri is the largest cave in the Waitomo area at 4.5 km, with roughly 1.5 km on the guided route and over a kilometre of that walked. That length is the point of it. If you have one afternoon and a camera, that is the better ticket. If you have 90 minutes and a mental image of a boat under a starfield, the 45-minute Glowworm Caves tour is the only thing that supplies it.
Which one works if someone cannot manage steps?
Ruakuri, and only Ruakuri. The Glowworm Cave has stairs throughout. The handrails and formed paths are good, and anyone with reasonable mobility is fine, but there is no step-free route and no way around that. Ruakuri was rebuilt with a spiral concrete ramp specifically so that it could be entered without steps.
That matters more than it sounds for mixed groups. A family with a grandparent using a walking frame, or a couple with a pushchair, will have a much better afternoon booking Ruakuri than trying to make the Glowworm Cave work. Can you do more than one?
Yes, and the combo tickets exist for exactly that. The operator sells a Twin Cave Combo pairing Aranui with the Glowworm Caves from NZ$125, and two further paired bundles from NZ$170. The catch is transport: Ruakuri and Aranui both need your own vehicle from the village, while the Glowworm Cave is a walk from the visitor centre.

So which should you book?
If you can only do one and you have never seen glowworms, book the Glowworm Cave. The boat under the Grotto is the thing New Zealand is known for, it is over quickly, and it is genuinely worth the 45 minutes. Everyone else has a better option sitting five minutes down the road.

Is Ruakuri worth the extra money over the Glowworm Cave?
At the operator's gate prices, NZ$116 against NZ$81, you are paying about 45% more for twice the time underground, a kilometre of walking, photography rights and step-free access. If any one of those matters to you, yes. If you specifically want the Grotto boat, no amount of extra time replaces it.
Which cave is less crowded?
Ruakuri, consistently, in traveller reports. The Glowworm Cave runs departures every 30 minutes through the day and reviewers describe groups of around 23 with tours back to back. Ruakuri's longer format spaces groups out. Neither figure is published by the operator.
Can you walk to Ruakuri and Aranui from the village?
The operator states that both need your own transport. The Glowworm Cave is the one you can reach on foot from the visitor centre. There is a free bush walk near Ruakuri, but that is a separate track, not access to the cave tour.
Does Aranui really have no glowworms?
Correct, and it is not a shortcoming. Glowworm larvae need water below them to fish over, and Aranui is a dry cave. What it has instead is the finest formation work of the three, which is why it is usually sold paired with the Glowworm Cave rather than on its own.
